Jaydev Unadkat to replace Mohammed Shami for Bangladesh Tests | Cricket News – Times of India

MUMBAI: A year can be a long, long time in the life of a cricketer. Ask Jaydev Unadkat.
On January 4, 2022, soon after the BCCI postponed the 2021-22 season of the Ranji Trophy indefinitely due to rising Covid-19 cases, the 31-year-old posted a picture of the red cricket ball, and urged for it to give him “one more chance.”
“Dear red ball, please give me one more chance.. I’ll make you proud, promise!” wrote the Saurashtra captain. Well, the red ball HAS given him a chance.

On Saturday, TOI learnt that the experienced left-arm seamer was recalled into the Indian team when he was picked as a replacement for the injured Mohammed Shami for the upcoming two-Test series in Bangladesh. An official announcement in this regard from the BCCI should follow soon. The much-awaited recall is a just reward for years of toil, persistence and success in domestic cricket for the ever-smiling Unadkat.
Around a week back, he had captained Saurashtra to the Vijay Hazare Trophy (One-dayers) title, taking 1-25 in 10 overs against Maharashtra in the final, and 4-26 in 10 overs against Karnataka in the semifinals at Ahmedabad. With 19 wickets in 10 [email protected], and best bowling figures of five for 23 against Himachal, Unadkat had finished as the highest wicket-taker in the tournament.
He has played 18 internationals for India -one Test, seven ODIs and 10 T20Is. The only Test he played for India was as long back as in December 2010, against South Africa at Centurion.
A veteran of 96 First-Class matches with 353 wickets, he was the highest wicket-taker (67) in the 2019-20 Ranji Trophy season, during which he led Saurashtra to the title. He also took 39 wickets in the 2018-19 season in which Saurashtra lost the final to Vidarbha
TOI had earlier reported that left-arm spinner Saurabh Kumar has been picked to replace Ravindra Jadeja, while opener Abhimanyu Easwaran is set to be called in as Rohit Sharma’s replacement, if the Indian captain fails to recover from a finger injury (dislocation) he sustained during the second ODI against Bangladesh in Dhaka.
The first Test will kick off in Chattogram from December 14. Express pacer Umran Malik had replaced Shami in the three-match ODI series after the latter was ruled out due to a shoulder injury.
