Image Maria Andreotti runs M&P Tax Service and Consultants, an accounting firm that her father started over 40 years ago in the Bensonhurst area of Brooklyn. Andreotti, 52, says this year is different.
“It’s the child tax credit, it’s the stimulus payments, it’s the unemployment benefits. This year, there are more questions than ever that have to be asked.”
“We ask a laundry list of questions: How much did you get? Did your spouse also get it? Have you had a child in the interim? Because if you had a child in ’21, then they wouldn’t have been eligible and we have to claim it for you on your tax return. We say: ‘You got all those papers?’”
“And crypto’s happening. We’re seeing it more and more. Probably 10 percent of our people who were into stocks are into crypto.”
“From January to early June it’s an intense, crazy time for us. My cellphone starts getting texts and calls at 6:30 a.m. and goes until 8:30 or 9 o’clock at night. It’s a good thing I don’t need a lot of sleep.”
“I’ve been doing this my whole life: weekends, summers, all through school.”
“We are a family-owned accounting firm. We started in our dining room in Bensonhurst. At tax time, we’d have people in the dining room, the living room, down the front steps and out the door waiting to be seen into the wee hours of the morning. My father had a day job then and did taxes at night.”
“I worked with my father starting when I was 10 — there were no copy machines so we were hand-copying returns using carbon paper.”
“In 2020, we were all remote, so clients were sending documents electronically or dropping them off in a bin at my parents’ side door.”
“In 2021, we had a tremendous amount of people claiming unemployment benefits. We saw an explosion of people refinancing — both business and personal — because interest rates were so low. We did a lot of that — more than we had ever done.”
“We have generations of families coming through here — that’s how long we’ve been doing it. People come in here for help with everything, not just taxes. They say: ‘I got this letter, can you read it for me? What do I do about it?’ Somebody will come in here and say, ‘Maria can you help us?’ At some point over the last 40-some odd years word’s gotten out that if you need help with something, go to my father, Pio. Dad’s kind of an institution.”
“In June, to celebrate, we order a big lunch and actually sit together and eat, which we never get to do.”
