IPL 2023: Delhi Capitals’ coaching team, scouts under scanner | Cricket News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: With the domestic batters offering little spark through their torrid IPL season so far, Delhi Capitals may well be looking to revisit its entire backroom staff from coaching to scouts.
On Saturday night, the young batters like Sarfaraz Khan, Priyam Garg and Ripal Patel failed to keep up the tempo as Capitals chased 198 against Sunrisers Hyderabad after Mitchell Marsh and Phil Salt had hammered 112 in 11 overs.
Marsh tried to defend the management’s decision to send Garg and Sarfaraz ahead of the in-form Axar Patel.

“We got a lot of belief in all our players. There’s some inexperienced players in our lineup, but you got to have faith, you got to throw those guys in there and I don’t think the game was lost there tonight,” Marsh said after the match.
However, TOI understands that the Capitals management isn’t happy with how the scouting has gone over the last two years which has led to poor preparation for the auctions.
“There are people who have very little experience of high-quality cricket and they have been tasked with scouting talent. The management is very miffed with the absence of lead coaches at the auction table too,” a source told TOI.

Six years ago, this franchise had decided to invest in youth like Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Prithvi Shaw and Axar Patel. As these youngsters were gained experience, senior pros like Shikhar Dhawan were given major roles.
Unlike the previous lot, this current lot of youngsters haven’t set domestic white-ball cricket on fire. Yash Dhull was untested when he was picked purely on the basis that he did with the India U-19 team. Sarfaraz has been prolific in red-ball cricket but he too hasn’t dominated the white-ball format. Ripal has been groomed for three seasons at Capitals but still hasn’t found his groove. Lalit Yadav’s lack of growth has also disappointed the management. Yet, he was preferred over the experience of R Ashwin.

“It’s true that the mega auction disrupted the core of the team. But there should have been a ploy to somehow buy back most of the star players. The scouting is majorly based only on analysis on computers,” the source said.
With 10 teams playing in IPL, the talent pool has dried up for Capitals to rebuild. It can be assumed that the management is punting on the transfer window to open to do some heavy trading before the next season.
As of now, DC are languishing at the bottom of the table with virtually no chance of making it to the playoffs.
