HIGHLIGHTS
- SRH have retained Kane Williamson, Abdul Samad, Umran Malik and Rashid Khan
- The announcement of the retentions also all but confirms SRH parting ways with David Warner
- IPL retention rules allow franchises to hang on to four players out of which two can be overseas cricketers
SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) have retained captain Kane Williamson and ace Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan along with Umran Malik, the Indian uncapped fast bowler who turned heads with his express pace towards the latter stages of the 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL) season.
The announcement of the retentions also all but confirms SRH parting ways with long-time skipper David Warner. Warner, who led them to their only IPL title in 2016 and is among the highest run scorers of all time in the history of the tournament, was dropped unceremoniously from captaincy and eventually the team itself last season after making some low totals.
SRH have also let go of Indian fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who was also crucial to their run to the title in 2016, in what seems to be an effort to rebuild the squad after their dismal 2021 season. SRH managed just six points, losing 11 out of 14 matches and finish bottom of the table.
IPL retention rules allow franchises to hang on to four players out of which two can be overseas cricketers. The franchise will be spending Rs 42 crore if they retain 4 players, leaving them with Rs 48 crore to spend in the IPL 2022 mega-auctions in January.
