Pat Cummins surprised himself more than anyone else when he cracked a match-winning 14-ball half-century, equalling the record for the fastest fifty in IPL history, against Mumbai Indians at the MCA Stadium in Pune.
“I probably think I’m most surprised by that innings. I’m glad that it came off,” Cummins said after the victory. However, he stated that he kept the game simple. “I was just thinking of having a swing if it was in my area. I wasn’t trying to overthink it.”
MI skipper Rohit Sharma had his plan in place, holding back his main weapon Jasprit Bumrah for KKR’s most dangerous late-order hitter Andre Russell. Rohit must have sensed his chances seeing the West Indian depart early and KKR in a spot of bother at 101 for five in the 14th over.
Aussie allrounder Cummins subsequently made a mockery of the MI bowling. “We had the game till the 15th over, but then Cummins was brilliant,” Rohit later said.
“I had a clear thinking: just clear the ropes. Venky (Venkatesh Iyer) was out there and he was batting well. I thought it would be good if I could get a few shots and make his job easy. For the shorter side of the boundary, I just try to get across and target that area specifically,” the Australia Test captain said.
KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer too did not expect such a batting onslaught from Cummins, who was playing his first match of the season. “Extraordinary! I couldn’t believe the way he was hitting the ball,” Shreyas said. What stunned the middle-order batter more was that “yesterday in the nets, he (Cummins) was getting bowled now and then. During the timeout, the plan was for Venky to drop anchor and tell Pat to just swing at everything”.
Cummins is going through one of the best phases of playing career. He led Australia to a 4-0 Ashes romp in his first series in charge and arrived in India on the back of a 1-0 Test series triumph on Australia’s first tour of Pakistan in 24 years. Despite missing the second Test in Adelaide, the right-arm quick was the highest wicket-taker in the Ashes series, and he shared the honour with teammate Nathan Lyon in Pakistan.
Coming good with the willow now adds to his credentials. “I’m sure I’ll get some messages about my Test-match batting, where I can hardly get it off the square,” he said with a smile.
