IPL 2021: What the numbers say – How the 8 current captains have fared so far in IPL history | Cricket News – Times of India

0
One of the big talking points of this edition of the IPL (2021) is how Rishabh Pant has fared as captain. Pant being made captain was a move that Delhi Capitals were forced to make after their regular skipper Shreyas Iyer picked up a nasty shoulder injury in March this year.
Pant’s success as captain in phase 1, which ended with the DC team on top of the points table (6 wins in 8 matches), made the team management decide to continue with Pant as skipper, despite Iyer returning to the DC fold after a shoulder surgery and rehabilitation for the second leg in the UAE.
In that context, it would be interesting to see how the eight current captains have fared in their leadership roles, going by the wins and losses they have against their names. The likes of Pant, KL Rahul and Sanju Samson are very new to the leadership roles, while others like MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are of course veterans.
MS Dhoni (CSK)
This Chennai Super Kings and you will think of MS Dhoni. The two names are synonymous with each other. Dhoni has been the CSK captain since the inception of the IPL in 2008. When it comes to tactical acumen, foresight, the ability to guide youngsters and soaking in pressure, there is probably no one better than the former India captain. This is why he is still highly regarded and respected. In the two years when CSK were suspended, Dhoni captained the now defunct Rising Pune Supergiants. Overall, MSD has been captain in 196 IPL matches, of which he has won 116 and lost 79. In all his years of captaining CSK in the IPL, there has been only 1 no result under his captaincy. Dhoni enjoys a win percentage of 59.48%.

Rohit Sharma (MI)
The most successful captain in the history of the IPL, in terms of titles won (5), Rohit Sharma is one of the biggest pillars of the Mumbai Indians franchise. Rohit, who is widely regarded as the frontrunner to replace Virat Kohli as India’s T2-I captain, after Virat steps down post the upcoming T20 World Cup has been captain only for the MI franchise. The total number of matches Rohit has captained in are 124, of which his team won 72 and lost 48. There have also been as many as 4 tied matches under his captaincy. In the win % calculated here, ties are counted as half a win. Rohit overall has a win percentage of 59.67 as skipper. In the current edition though Rohit and his team find themselves in a position where they need to bounce back quickly, after having lost both their matches so far in phase 2 of IPL 2021.

Virat Kohli (RCB)
Virat Kohli is yet to win an IPL title, as captain or player, having been part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore franchise since the inception of the league in 2008. This edition in fact is his last chance to change that statistic. Virat has already announced that he will be stepping down as RCB captain after the 2021 edition, but that he intends to carry on playing for the franchise. Virat has played a total of 200 matches for RCB in the IPL and has been captain in 133 of them. The team has won 60 matches under his captaincy and lost 66 and there have been 3 tied matches under his watch as well as 4 matches that were no results. Overall, Virat has a win percentage of 47.67 in the IPL.

Eoin Morgan (KKR)
Eoin Morgan is one of the newer captains in the IPL and he and his KKR team have bounced back hard in phase 2 of IPL 2021. After having a nightmare time in phase 1, KKR have so far won both the matches they have played so far (vs RCB and MI) and have broken into the top four. Overall, what this has done to Morgan’s captaincy statistics is that it has increased his win count to 6 wins in 16 matches. The number of losses under his captaincy still outweigh the wins though (9). His overall captaincy win percentage currently, after Thursday’s big win vs Mumbai Indians stands at 40.62%

KL Rahul (PK)
Another relatively new IPL captain is Indian opener KL Rahul. Rahul leads the renamed Punjab Kings franchise and has so far experienced the same fate as Morgan – losing more matches than he has won. The extremely close loss (2 runs) vs Rajasthan Royals would have really hurt the Kings and they will be itching to bounce back hard when they play their next match on Saturday vs Sunrisers Hyderabad (second match of the day). So far, in the IPL, Rahul has captained 22 matches, winning 8 and losing 12. He has also overseen two tied matches and has an overall win percentage of 40.90 as skipper

Rishabh Pant (DC)
Talking about new captains, one of the newest is Delhi Capitals’ Rishabh Pant. The 23 year old was made captain after Shreyas Iyer picked up a horrible shoulder injury that forced him to undergo surgery and rehabilitation. Pant though took to captaincy like a fish to water. Before the break, in phase 1 of IPL 2021, Pant took DC to the top of the points table. After the break, Pant and DC have picked up from where they left off. Overall, Pant has so far captained DC in 9 IPL matches, winning as many as 6 of them and losing 2. One was a tied match. He has a very healthy win percentage of 72.22. Pant and DC are eying their maiden IPL title.

Sanju Samson (RR)
Sanju Samson is in the same bracket as Rishabh Pant, in more ways that one – They are both wicketkeeper batsmen and are both leading IPL teams. Samson was made captain of the Rajasthan Royals franchise ahead of the 2021 season and has so far captained the 2008 champions in 8 matches, one less than Pant. But unlike Pant, Samson’s win-loss ratio is split down the middle. So far he has 4 wins and 4 losses as skipper, with a win percentage of 50%. Samson and his RR franchise will be in action next on Saturday, in the first match of the day when they take on Pant and the DC juggernaut.

Kane Williamson (SRH)
Kane Williamson is a more seasoned captain, having captained New Zealand in international cricket and also held the captain’s post at the Sunrisers Hyderabad, in the absence of David Warner. After Warner came back and took over captaincy, Williamson was once again handed the charge of the team earlier this season, when the team found itself languishing at the bottom of the points table, with just 1 win in their first 6 matches. Overall, Williamson has captained SRH in just 14 matches so far and his wins column outweighs the losses one by the smallest of margins. As SRH captain in the IPL, Williamson has 14 wins and 13 losses so far and 1 tied match. That puts his overall win percentage as skipper at 51.78%.
