Mahendra Singh Dhoni showered praise on opener Ruturaj Gaikwad and Dwayne Bravo for their quick-fire 39-run partnership for the sixth wicket as it helped Chennai Super Kings to reach 156 for 6 in 20 overs.

“At 30 for 4, you want to put up a respectable score. I felt Ruturaj Gaikwad and Dwayne Bravo got us more than what we expected. We thought of 140, to get close to 160 was tremendous,” said MS Dhoni after the match.

Chennai Super Kings defeated Mumbai Indians by 20 runs as the Indian Premier League resumed in Dubai on Sunday.

Gaikwad batted through the innings to lift Chennai Super Kings from a precarious 7 for 3 to 156 for 6. The late spark was provided by Bravo (23 off 8 balls) as CSK recovered from a disastrous start to put up a fighting total.

“The wicket was two-paced, slightly slow to start off. Most of them got out to the slowness. If you come later and you want to go hard and that’s why we lost wickets,” said Dhoni.

“Rayudu got injured, so it was tough to come back from there, but we batted sensibly and finished superbly. It was sensible for one batter to bat right through to the end,” he added.

On Rayudu’s injury, Dhoni said: “Rayudu was smiling, so he hasn’t broken his arm. He has four days now and that should help him.”

Chasing 157 on a pitch where the ball often stopped on the batsmen, the Mumbai Indians only managed to score 136 for 8 in 20 overs.

Saurabh Tiwary (50 not out) top scored for the Mumbai Indians.
