iphone: How Apple may use the iPhone to prevent drunk driving – Times of India

0
Apple has filed a new patent application with the US Patent & Trademark Office related to a breathalyzer feature for the iPhone which will be synced with the Car Keys interfaces, as per a report by Patently Apple. In other words, the tech giant is mulling over bringing a feature to the iPhone to test the alcohol levels for driving so that drunk driving cases may be prevented.
How it would work is that there would be one or more unlocking criteria for the iPhone user to access the Car Keys. And since it is a breathalyzer feature, the unlocking criteria may be a biometric one like the blood alcohol level. To be able to unlock the Car Keys, the user’s iPhone would get a notification which says that he/she would have to breathe into a breathalyzer. The iPhone (or Apple Watch) could have an inbuilt breathalyzer feature or it may be a car feature that can wirelessly connect with the iPhone.
Apple has thought of other ways to check if it is safe for the user to drive the vehicle, like one or more sets of challenges. It could be a manual dexterity challenge or a mental clarity challenge like questions pertaining to mathematics, adds the report. Upon successful completion of the challenge, the restriction on operating the vehicle gets lifted. If you fail the test, the restriction stays and since you can’t unlock your car, you won’t be able to drive, which might just save your life that day.

Apple’s Car Keys feature lets you unlock, lock and manage other functions on an NFC-capable vehicle with the help of your iPhone or Apple Watch. To lock or unlock your vehicle, Apple users have to hold their iPhones or Apple Watches close to the NFC reader which is inside the car. Then, the NFC reader detects the digital key to carry out the function.
