Intern ‘attacked’ at Delhi’s Hindu Rao Hospital, doctors seek FIR against patient – ET HealthWorld

NEW DELHI: A doctor undergoing internship at Hindu Rao Hospital was allegedly attacked by a woman admitted to the facility, prompting the resident doctors’ association (RDA) to demand an FIR from the administration. The doctors’ body also warned that if competent security personnel are not provided, they would withdraw all emergency services.

There was no immediate response from the Hindu Rao medical superintendent.

In a letter to the hospital medical superintendent, the RDA said the incident happened in the early hours of May 1, around 1-2am, near the nursing station of surgery casualty. The patient hurled abuses at the intern doctor, pulled her by her hair and slapped her, the association claimed.

The resident doctors demanded immediate and permanent overhaul in hospital security, adding that till it adequately improves, they will be forced to withdraw all emergency services, given the “unsafe working environment” in casualty.

“The attack was completely unprovoked, since the said doctor had not even participated in the verbal tussle between the nursing officer and the patient. Even though there were male medical personnel present, it is clear the patient deliberately chose to target the victim, expecting minimal chance of retaliation, even though the doctor had no role in the series of events… The security guard who was supposed to protect her just stood in the corner…” the RDA’s letter stated.

The doctors also demanded immediate action against those responsible for the security lapse.

“This only highlights how vulnerable young female medical personnel on floor duties are. This cannot be accepted as another job hazard where an unfortunate person finds oneself at the wrong place at the wrong time. Labouring day and night, in wards and casualty, is exactly the right place where a trainee doctor is supposed to be. The only thing wrong here is the violence that the security guard could not prevent,” the letter said.

The association highlighted that during the pandemic, it was young medical personnel who answered the call of duty and faced risk of infection.

“This was not an incident of random chance, where no one is guilty except mechanical failure. It’s a reflection of how unimportant public-funded healthcare is in the eyes of policymakers and this translates into total apathy for the safety of young doctors… We refuse to accept unprovoked unjust violence as a ‘job hazard’… We are not expendable,” the letter asserted.
