Internet chaos has ensued as some of the biggest social media sites have suddenly gone down this evening. Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp have all been reported as not working for users across the UK.
Website outage tracker Down Detector has reported tens of thousands of individual outages across the UK.
Outages were first reported at 4.14pm this afternoon.
Instagram.com is flashing a 5xx Server Error message when users try to access the site through a browser.
The Instagram app is loading but issues a “couldn’t refresh feed” warning when users attempt to load new posts and messages.
Another seperate warning when users try to reload their profile reads: “We’re sorry, but something went wrong. Please try again.”
Facebook and Whatsapp, all of which are owned by the same company, have both issued messages via Twitter.
The Facebook feed reads: “We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing Facebook app.
“We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and we apologize for any inconvenience.”
The WhatsApp Twitter account reads: “We’re aware that some people are experiencing issues with WhatsApp at the moment.
“We’re working to get things back to normal and will send an update here as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience!”
Outage tracker Down Detector, which compiles reports of outages among real-time users, shows more than 30,00 reports of the site not working so far.
According to the site, 51 percent of these users have reported issues with app, and a further 23 percent have reported an issue with Instagram.com.
The issue appears to be widespread, with users reported outages across the UK and Ireland, as well as other parts of Europe.
