Inside a vibrant family cottage on Sydney’s northern beaches
Take inspiration from some of Australia’s best living spaces, featured in Sunday Life. Vibrant colours, collected treasures and beautiful fabrics create a warm welcome in this light family home.
The home
A 1980s cottage on Sydney’s northern beaches with bright, open-plan living spaces, a large entertaining terrace, and a lush garden.
Who lives here
Designer Lauren Emerson, co-founder of Walter G textiles, restaurateur Andrew Emerson and their children, Freda, 3, and Otto, 10 months, as well as Kipper, the family’s German wirehaired pointer.
What we did
“The house itself was a blank white canvas and just needed some pattern and texture to make it feel uniquely ours,” says Lauren. “The garden is constantly changing season to season. We have extended the rear deck and added a banquette seat that captures a view of the setting sun.”
Favourite room
The sun-drenched deck. “It’s home to feasts with friends and, in winter, where we gather around the firepit and toast marshmallows.”
The ’hood
“We love the community and the village atmosphere, the friends we’ve made, the empty beaches and boat access to glorious Pittwater and the Hawkesbury.”
Future plans
“Coaxing my dad into designing a fourth bedroom.”
