KOLKATA: Indian archers got a shot in the arm as they received their visas to travel to Paris for the World Cup Stage III. The event will be crucial for the women recurve archers as it will provide them the last chance to gain team quota (three berths) for the Tokyo Olympics.
While the men’s team of Atanu Das, Tarundeep Rai and Pravin Jadhav have got the maximum quota places, only Deepika Kumari has won an individual quota in the women’s category so far.
The recurve archers made a good start returning to international action after a gap of almost two years by putting up their best-ever show in a World Cup, winning three gold and one bronze in the Stage I event in Guatemala City in April.
However, the squad missed out on participating in the Stage II event in Lausanne after the Swiss embassy denied them visas.
The Olympic qualification event will take place on June 18 and 19 in Paris while the Stage III competition is scheduled from June 21 to 27 at the same venue.
The top three teams in the qualification event will earn quota places.
As the archers will have to undergo a 10-day quarantine in Paris, the women archers, who will take part in the qualification event, will leave early.
“The women’s side with the support staff will leave on Saturday, while the men’s contingent will leave on June 9,” Archery Association of India (AAI) secretary general Pramod Chandurkar told TOI on Thursday.
The Paris tournament will also see the return to action of Indian compound archers who missed out on both stages of the World Cup so far. Having been denied visas for the second, the team had to return from the airport before boarding the flight for the Stage I meet following their head coach’s false Covid-19 positive report.
