Having been completely outplayed by England in the opening ODI, India will look to bounce back with a far better performance in the second game at Taunton on Wednesday.
Both batting and the bowling department will need to step up considerably in the day-night game. In the first game on Sunday, the batters literally crawled their way to 201-8 in 50 overs, consuming as many as 181 dot balls in the process, and the bowlers seemed clueless in allowing England chase down the target with eight wickets left.
If India harbour aspirations of doing well in the ODI World Cup in New Zealand early next year, they clearly need to pull up their socks.
“It was a lacklustre performance. You can’t play so many dot balls in an ODI. However, the real lacuna was in the bowling,” former India skipper Shanta Rangaswamy told TOI on Tuesday.
“Hopefully they (the team management) will be effecting some changes in the playing XI and their approach to the game. Fingers crossed, I’m hoping our team does well.”
Seeing the overcast conditions at Bristol, India went in with three seamers, but apart from the experienced Jhulan Goswami, the other two seamers — Shikha Pandey, who’s making a comeback into the ODI team, and Pooja Vastrakar — were easy meat for the English batters.
“See, England played three spinners, so we too must show faith in our tweakers,” said Rangaswamy. Rana can thus be the second off-spinning all-rounder along with Deepti Sharma.
Rangaswamy, currently a member of the BCCI’s Apex Council, recommended that India recall leggie Poonam Yadav and off-spinner Sneh Rana, who was excluded from the first ODI despite a brilliant all-round performance in the one-off Test at Bristol — salvaging a draw for India with 80 not out, besides picking four wickets.
