NEW DELHI: India’s batting performance fell short, resulting in a disappointing defeat by 40 runs in the opening ODI against Bangladesh. This match marked India’s first-ever encounter with Bangladesh in the 50-over format.
Having won the toss and electing to bowl, India witnessed a commendable ODI debut by the young pace bowler Amanjot Kaur, who made a strong impact by taking four wickets for 31 runs. As a result of their disciplined efforts, Bangladesh was contained to a modest total of 152 runs in 43 overs.
However, when it came time for India to chase the seemingly comfortable target, their batting lineup faltered, leading to their downfall as they were bowled out for a mere 113 runs in 35.5 overs.
The underwhelming batting display proved to be their undoing in the match.
Deepti Sharma top-scored for India with a 40-ball 20.
Marufa Akter picked up four wickets for Bangladesh, giving away 29 runs.
Earlier, the 23-year-old Amanjot accounted for opener Murshida Khatun, Fargana Hoque, captain Nigar Sultana and Rabeya Khan as Bangladesh struggled in the match reduced to 44-overs-a-side affair due to rain.
Nigar Sultana was the highest run-getter for the home team at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, scoring 39 and sharing a crucial 49-run partnership with Fargana Hoque (27).
Bangladesh’s last batter Shorna Akther did not come out to bat in the 44th over as she was injured.
