India vs WI Tests: Top 3 Windies cricketers to watch out for | Cricket News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Though the current West Indies outfit is not the same formidable side as their world-beating predecessors, they can still be tough to beat at home.
And the upcoming two-Test series against India on their soil would give the Windies plenty of chances to showcase their talent.
TimesofIndia.com here looks at 3 West Indies cricketers who you need to watch out for in the Test series against India starting July 12:
Kraigg Brathwaite (Right hand bat – Opening batter)
The leader of the side, Kraigg Brathwaite’s conversion rate may not be great but there’s no doubting his potential. Brathwaite hit 2 half-centuries on the turning tracks in India in 2011, but he was axed after 3 ducks in 5 innings in the home series against Australia. He was back in the Windies squad two years later on the back of solid performances against India A and has not looked back since.
Brathwaite has played a stellar role in some of the Windies Test victories in recent times. At Port of Spain in 2014 he hit a fine match-winning century in the first innings against New Zealand. Brathwaite’s 142* and 60* against Pakistan in the third Test in Sharjah paved the way for a five-wicket win and prevented a series sweep. His 134 and 95 at Leeds powered the Windies to another five-wicket win against England in 2017.
In the 85 Tests that he has played so far, Brathwaite has scored 5349 runs with 28 fifties, 12 hundreds and a double hundred and as the leader and opener of the side, is expected to give the Windies solid starts against India.
Tagenarine Chanderpaul (Left hand bat – Opening batter)
The name Chanderpaul is sure to ring a bell. Shivnarine Chanderpaul, a West Indian great of Indian descent hit 7 hundreds in the 25 Tests that he played against India.
This time around, the Indians will brace up to face another Chanderpaul, the veteran Shivnarine’s son Tagenarine, who has more than one similarity with his father when he has the bat in hand.
Apart from being a left-handed batsman with a high back lift, Tagenarine also marks his guard at the crease with a bail, like his father used to do.
And in a short career of 6 Tests in which he has already hit a hundred and a double hundred, Tagenarine has shown enough glimpses to show that he not only has a secure future but can also be the leader of the next generation of Windies batsmen.
He has a Test average of over 45 and the series against India can certainly be a stepping stone for Tagenarine to take giant strides in international cricket.
Kemar Roach (Right arm fast medium bowler)
A veteran of 77 Tests, Kemar Roach is the current pace spearhead of the West Indian team. He is well under six feet, but his quick arm action enables him to hurl down 140kmph+ deliveries and his pace has often troubled batsmen.
Though Roach has played just 3 Tests against India, he already has 11 wickets in his kitty in this contest. The right arm fast medium bowler in fact missed out on a hat-trick in the 2nd Test against India when the Virat Kohli-led side toured the Caribbean last time in 2019.
Roach had both KL Rahul and Kohli caught behind by keeper Jahmar Hamilton. Memories of dismissing Kohli for a first ball duck will surely still be fresh in his mind.
Roach has 11 five-wicket hauls in Test cricket overall, including one at Lord’s against England in 2017 when he was making his comeback.
