KOLKATA: It was not the start Ravi Bishnoi was looking for when he came running around from long-off to take a well-judged catch of Nicholas Pooran, but sadly he touched the boundary rope while back-tracking to maintain the body balance. But the youngster was quick to get over that disappointment and made a telling impact in his debut international match. He ended up with two for 17 in his four overs — and was named ‘Man of the Match’ — to help India restrict West Indies to 157 for seven after skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and put the opposition in at the start of the first T20I here on Wednesday.
The skipper later laid the foundation for Suryakumar Yadav and Venkatesh Iyer to end it in style as India recorded a six-wicket victory, reaching 162 for four in 18.5 overs.
Bishnoi, who became the first member of India U-19 2020 World Cup squad to make the senior team debut, struggled a bit with his line and length, bowling six wides also. But he kept attacking the batters that fetched him rich dividends.

The Jodhpur boy was not afraid to even challenge the batters with some flights in his deliveries.
“I was just trying to bowl stump to stump and not give them room because they have the power to clear the boundary,” he said after the West Indies innings.
Bishnoi claimed his maiden international wicket by trapping Roston Chase with a googly and followed it up by getting Rovman Powell caught by Iyer at long-on two balls later.

Wicketkeeper-batter Pooran stood tall for West Indies after skipper Sharma won the toss and put the rivals in to bat first. Living up to his big purse in the recent IPL mega auction, the left-hander hit a fluent 61 off 43 balls that helped them put up a fighting 157 for seven in 20 overs. Pooran did not miss out anything that was in his zone and found four fours and five sixes.
The floodgates were opened by the experienced Bhuvneshwar Kumar who made a good comeback after being hit for a four in the first over of the match. He pulled his length back as Brandon King walked down only to lob it to Suryakumar Kumar. Yuzvendra Chahal was also on the mark, having opener Kyle Mayers when the left-hander missed the line going to play the slog sweep.

West Indies did get a boundary in all the six overs of the Powerplay, racing to 44 for one. But they kept losing wickets almost at regular intervals that often halted the run flow. Akeal Hosein hits Deepak Chahar for a huge six, but fell in the same over while skipper Kieron Pollard could not provide the necessary fireworks late in the innings staying undefeated for 24 off 19 balls. Medium pace Harshal Patel also contributed his bit, taking two for 37.

Rohit provided a fluent start getting 40 off just 19 balls. But India suffered a setback thereafter losing Ishan Kishan and Virat Kohli in consecutive overs with Fabian Allen being involved in both the dismissals. But Yadav did not allow West Indies to make a comeback as he began with consecutive boundaries off the first two balls that he faced. In spite of Rishabh Pant also failing to fire, Yadav and Iyer were involved in a 26-ball 48-run unbroken fifth-wicket stand that took India home.
