India vs England: England dwell on ‘best approach’ for Indian bowlers | Cricket News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: ‘Grinding it out’ seems to be a fading art in Test cricket. While ‘playing just for survival’ is a no-no in the Indian camp, England, it seems, are still figuring out the best batting approach to counter the potent Indian attack.
The second innings in Nottingham indicated that the English batsmen had resorted to an aggressive approach of taking the Indian bowling on. However, two days ahead of the second Test at Lord’s, Jonny Bairstow said the approach is not something England are fixated on.
“The pitch dictates that (the approach). It changed from the first innings. There were few more balls to hit in the second innings. It’s not that we have decided that we are going to be very aggressive. But it’s more about just showing intent and rotating the strike like we did in the first innings, when the conditions were very tough,” Bairstow said during a media interaction on Tuesday.
“It is difficult to say ‘this is my approach, I can’t see a change too much from the last game’. I have not played a lot of red ball cricket recently due to the scheduling and everything like that. If I continue the process and everything I did in this first Test, then that is the kind of approach I want to go with,” he added.
The English batting, except Joe Root, has looked at sea over the last six months. The lack of first-class cricket hasn’t helped. “If you are playing as much redball cricket due to the scheduling, (it’s) naturally going to have an impact. There is a rhythm to batting in Test cricket,” said Bairstow.
The Indian attack, led by Jasprit Bumrah, has got them working overtime. “Well, I can’t tell you all the discussions (about how they are going to play Bumrah),” Bairstow said while discussing the challenges posed by Bumrah.
“With his action, he (Bumrah) varies on the crease as to where his delivery points are, and we all know as well. He has only played 20 Tests and six of them in England I guess. So, there going to be times when bowlers adapt to change their skills sets according to the conditions,” said Bairstow.
