BIRMINGHAM: West Indies batting legend Brian Lara congratulated Jasprit Bumrah after the stand-in India skipper took a world record 35 runs off a Stuart Broad over on day two of the rescheduled fifth Test against England at Edgbaston.
Bumrah, who is India’s bowling spearhead, displayed his prowess with the bat as India’s tail wagged to help the visitors amass a total of 416, recovering from a precarious 98/5, in their first innings.
The two centurions of India’s first innings, Rishabh Pant (146) and Ravindra Jadeja (104), led the remarkable recover with a record sixth-wicket stand of 222.
Bumrah (31* off 16 balls) scored 29 runs in the over bowled by Broad, while six runs came off extras. The 35 total runs conceded are the most ever scored in a single Test-match over, surpassing the previous record (28 runs) held by Lara, Australia’s George Bailey and South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj.

“Join me in congratulating the young @Jaspritbumrah93 on breaking the record of Most Runs in a Single Over in Tests. Well done!” tweeted Lara.
Lara took 28 off one Robin Peterson over back in 2003, while Bailey (2013) and Maharaj (2020) also shared the record.

Coming to the match, India gained an edge on the rain-truncated day two, with Bumrah excelling with the ball as well, taking three wickets to reduce the hosts to 84/5 at close of play on Saturday.
Jonny Bairstow (12*) and Ben Stokes (0*) will resume proceedings for England on Sunday.
