India Ordered 2 Biryanis Every Second In 2022: Swiggy Report

Food delivery has become a very essential part of our daily lives. Whenever we feel hungry or start to crave our favourite foods, we whip out our phones and place orders for foods that are delivered to us in a matter of minutes. Indian foodies have a number of favourite foods that are the top-ordered on food aggregator applications every year, of which biryani has been the top rank holder. The 7th edition of the annual trends report by Swiggy has just been released and yet again, Biryani has emerged victorious! As per the report, Chicken Biryani has topped the charts as the most-ordered dish on the app for the seventh year in a row. “The dish showed its ‘asli dum’ with a mind-boggling 137 Biryanis being ordered per minute; that’s 2.28 Biryanis per second,” read the report by Swiggy shared on Thursday.

The top five most-ordered items on Swiggy, after chicken biryani, were masala dosa, chicken fried rice, paneer butter masala, and butter naan. As per the report, international flavours were also on the minds of Indian foodies as they ordered dishes like sushi, Mexican bowls, Korean ramen and Italian pasta along with the all-time favourite pizza. Coming to late-night cravings, popcorn ruled the list with over 22 lakh orders placed post-10 pm. Meanwhile, gulab jamun emerged as the favourite dessert which was ordered 27 lakh times in 2022.

Indians indeed have a comfortable spot for desi food and this was evident from the snack preferences as well. Samosa was the top-ordered snack on Swiggy with over 40 lakh orders placed for the deep-fried goodie. Other popular snacks that India loved in 2022 were pav bhaji, French fries, garlic breadsticks and hot wings.

Not all the food trends as per the report were based on junk food or unhealthy treats. Interestingly, Swiggy observed an uptick in clean eating with users opting for organic fruits and vegetables on the grocery delivery platform. More than 50 lakh kilograms of organic fruits and vegetables were sold on the app, and a majority of the healthy eaters came from cities like Bangalore, Mumbai and Hyderabad. Swiggy also saw an increase in searches for healthy, guilt-free food queries on the app by 23% this year.
