NEW DELHI: The crowd at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi cheered for every run that came from their local boy Virat Kohli’s willow during the second Test against Australia.
On a slow-turning track, Virat scored 44 runs in the first innings and then chipped in with 20 in the second innings.
In the process, the Indian run machine broke former India batsman Virender Sehwag’s record of the most runs scored in the Border Gavaskar Trophy.
Ahead of the second Test, in Delhi, Virat had 1694 runs in Border Gavaskar Trophy and he needed 44 to go past Sehwag’s 1738 runs tally.

Virat scored 64 runs in the match (44 & 20) and went past the former swashbuckling batsman’s record in style. The 34-year-old former India skipper now has 1758 runs in 22 Tests at an average of 46.26 in the Border Gavaskar Trophy, including 7 centuries and 5 fifties.
India’s batting legend Sachin Tendulkar is on top of the tally with 3262 runs in 34 Tests at an average of 56.24, including 9 centuries and 16 fifties.
VVS Laxman (2434 runs in 29 Tests) and Rahul Dravid (2143 runs in 32 Tests) are the other two cricketers who have scored 2000 and more runs in Border Gavaskar Trophy.

Virat is also the sixth-highest run-getter for India in Tests with 8195 runs in 106 Tests at an average of 48.49.
Virat also became the sixth and the fastest batter in the world to score 25,000 runs across formats during the second Test.
The other stalwarts to have scored more than 25,000 runs across formats are Indian icon Sachin Tendulkar (34357 from 664 matches), Sri Lankans Kumar Sangakkara (28016 from 594 matches), and Mahela Jayawardene (25957 from 652 matches), Australian Ricky Ponting (27483 from 560 matches) and South African Jacques Kallis (25534 from 519 matches).
India had defeated Australia by 6 wickets in Delhi Test and led the four-match series 2-0. With this win, India have retained the Boder-Gavaskar Trophy.
The third Test will be played at Indore’s Holkar Stadium from March 1.
