MUMBAI: After Arjun Tendulkar and Siddesh Lad, former Mumbai captain Aditya Tare too has quit Mumbai. The experienced wicketkeeper, who led the 41-time Ranji Trophy champions to their last Ranji title in the 2015-16 season, will play for the hilly state of Uttarakhand as a ‘Professional’ in the upcoming season.
The Mumbai selectors had recently excluded Tare from the list of 47 players for an off-season fitness camp at BKC. He was dropped from the Vijay Hazare Trophy last season, and was told by the selectors at that time that he wasn’t in the scheme of things in white-ball cricket anymore. All this seemed to have hurt the veteran ‘keeper-batsman, who applied to the Mumbai Cricket Association for an No-Objection Certificate to play for another state to the MCA on Monday.
“I won’t lie, it did hurt a bit the way things ended. But it’s time for new challenges, new environment and I am excited for this new phase in my playing career with so much yet to offer,” Tare said on Monday in an emotional statement to TOI.
“It’s difficult to put into words how I feel about moving on from Mumbai. Since I was about 16 years when I got my first Mumbai cap (for the Mumbai under-17 team), until today at the ripe age of 34, I’ve enjoyed myself, played with absolute pride and lived my dream of being a Mumbai player,” Tare said.
The 34-year-old first captained Mumbai to the semifinals in the 2014-15 season. He also led Mumbai to the final of the Ranji Trophy in the 2016-17 season. “Along the way I’ve had some successes and achievements and also endured criticism and failures but the moments spent with my teammates during those wins and losses have been my most enjoyable memories. The thing that I will miss the most is the Mumbai dressing room, it’s a special place, I was blessed to be a part of it for over a decade with some incredible players and people some of whom have been my best of friends. To all my Mumbai teammates over the years, you guys made me a better player. Thank you!” Tare said in his statement.
“I’m grateful to all my coaches, support staff, selectors and administrators of MCA who’ve played a massive role in my journey as a Mumbai player,” he added.
Besides Tare, the other ‘Professionals’ in the Uttarakhand team this season would be former Punjab batsman Jiwanjot Singh and ex-Baroda left-arm spinner Swapnil Singh, who has been retained. Meanwhile, while they have taken onboard a Mumbai player, Uttarakhand have released another Mumbaikar, Jay Bista, who had captained them in the last season.
“We were looking for a good, experienced ‘keeper-batsman from one of the Elite Group teams, since we’ll be playing in the Elite Group this season. We wanted him to take the captaincy, but he said he wants to be familiar with our team first,” Cricket Association of Uttarakhand secretary Mahim Verma told this paper from Dehradun. According to sources, Uttarakhand was also trying to rope in Lad, but the latter moved to Goa.
“I wish him all the best. If he’s getting an opportunity to play in all three formats, good for him,” said Mumbai chief selector Salil Ankola.
In the last four seasons, Mumbai have won the Vijay Hazare Trophy twice, and Tare has won the ‘Man of the Match’ award both times in the final. On October 20, 2018, he cracked 71 and took three catches to help Mumbai beat Delhi by three wickets. On March 15 last year, he slammed his maiden List A hundred (118 not out off 107 balls) to help Mumbai chase down 313 against Uttar Pradesh in just 41.3 overs at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. In the 2020-21 edition of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, he scored 299 runs in eight [email protected], including two fifties and a hundred. Overall, Tare has played in 80 First-Class matches, in which he’s effected 288 dismissals- 263 catches and 25 stumpings, besides scoring 4523 [email protected], with 9 centuries and 27 half-centuries, with a highest score of 222. In 73 List A games, Tare has taken 122 victims- 109 catches and 13 stumpings, besides having scored 1841 [email protected], with 12 fifties and one ton. In 110 T20 games, he has effected 70 scalps-53 catches and 17 stumpings, besides having scored 2177 [email protected], including 10 fifties.
Tare has represented the Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL.
