Darth Vader voice actor James Earl Jones has decided to call it quits from the Star Wars franchise. The actor is known for being the iconic voice of Sith Lord Darth Vader in the Star Wars franchise. Now, though James Earl Jones may be departing, his voice is going to stay for future Star Wars projects with the help of artificial intelligence, as per a report by Vanity Fair.
Jones has signed over the rights to his archival voice work so AI could work upon it to recreate his voice. Lucasfilm and a Ukrainian company called Respeecher are working on this voice recreation project with the help of machine learning. As per the report, Respeecher “uses archival recordings and a proprietary A.I. algorithm to create new dialogue with the voices of performers from long ago. ” The company helped recreate the Jones’s Darth Vader voice for the Obi-Wan Kenobi show and also the voice of a young Luke Skywalker for The Book of Boba Fett.
“What Respeecher could do better than anyone was re-create the unforgettably menacing way that Jones, now 91, sounded half a lifetime ago “, adds the report.
Disney’s Obi-Wan Kenobi TV show brought the life of the Jedi Master in focus after the terrible events of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, the prequel trilogy topper. Darth Vader played a pivotal role in the six-part series and is shown being on the hunt for his old master Obi-Wan, sending Inquisitors to ferret him out from whatever place he is hiding at.
There are more Star Wars projects in the works and the voice of Jones is certainly going to remind film goers and Star Wars fans that one of the biggest villains in the history of cinema will be trying to make the resistance of the opposing side useless. The AI voice project also makes it easier for the creative teams at Disney and Lucasfilm to think of possible storylines with Darth Vader in future, with the AI-enabled voice of James Earl Jones supporting them.
