Here’s when Microsoft may release Windows 12 – Times of India

0
Microsoft had announced that Windows 11 will be returning to a once-a-year major update cycle, matching the other platforms available in the industry in 2021. Following this, the company is now planning to imbibe “a new engineering schedule for Windows” which will allow Microsoft to “return to a more traditional three-year release cycle for major versions of the Windows client.” The tech giant is planning to ship “major” versions of the Windows client every three years with the next version scheduled to release in 2024 (three years after Windows 11 was shipped in 2021), as per a report by Windows Central.
Meanwhile, the company will also increase the output of new features released for the current version of Windows available on the market, the report suggests. Moreover, Microsoft’s new decision will mean the end of the Windows client release, codenamed Sun Valley 3, which was planned for 2023.
Microsoft’s new “Moments” feature
As per the report, Microsoft is initiating a new “Moments” feature with Windows 11 version 22H2 (Sun Valley 2). This feature is designed to allow the company to introduce new features and experiences “at key points throughout the year,” except the major OS releases. The report also mentions that Microsoft is expected to release new features every few months for the Windows version already available in the market, up to four times a year, starting from 2023. For example, earlier this year, Microsoft included the weather information in the taskbar without releasing a major update.
This means that the company doesn’t have to roll out major Windows updates to enable new features. Microsoft released the Windows Subsystem for Android as an app that users can install on Windows 11 and was made available a few months after the OS was first launched. Moreover, this new release system could make each new version of Windows more exciting as the company will get more time to build new features into each release and find and squash any bugs before they are rolled out for general availability, the report states.
How this new move will be a big one for Microsoft
The report also claims that this will be a “big shift” from the path that Microsoft has been following for the past few years. Earlier, Microsoft used to roll out two major new versions of the Windows 10 OS every year, which was initially released in 2015. However, with Windows 11, the company has assured to release a major new version every year. Meanwhile, it is important to note that Microsoft is yet to officially announce any such change which indicates that internal plans might still change.
