Here Are This Year’s Largest Physician Groups

The largest physician group in the U.S. has nearly 14,000 doctors, according to a new analysis from Definitive Healthcare provided to MedPage Today.

Physician groups come in many varieties, from large health system-affiliated groups to contract management groups to small practices owned by physicians. Definitive Healthcare says it tracks more than 125,000 such groups — but the top 20 are mostly dominated by those run by large health systems.

Here’s a look at the top 20 physician groups in the U.S. this year and how many physicians they employ (data are current through April 2023):

1. Kaiser Permanente Southern California: 13,716

2. Kaiser Permanente Northern California: 11,570

3. Select Physical Therapy; Florida: 9,142

4. HCA Florida Healthcare Physicians; Florida: 7,213

5. University of Pittsburgh Physicians; Pennsylvania: 5,742

6. Mayo Clinic Physicians; Minnesota: 5,581

7. RWJBarnabas Health Medical Group; New Jersey: 5,570

8. NYU Langone Health Physicians; New York: 5,094

9. Northwestern Medical Group; Illinois: 5,029

10. HealthCare Partners IPA; New York: 5,018

11. Northwell Health Physician Partners; New York: 4,954

12. Hill Physicians Medical Group; California: 4,556

13. Penn Medicine Physicians; Pennsylvania: 4,465

14. Ascension Medical Group; Indiana: 4,444

15. Ballad Health Physicians; Tennessee: 4,313

16. Banner Health Physicians; Arizona: 4,227

17. Mercy Clinic Physicians; Oklahoma: 4,131

18. Beaumont Health Physicians; Michigan: 4,093

19. Advocate Medical Group; Illinois: 3,985

20. Geisinger Health Physicians; Pennsylvania: 3,885

Definitive Healthcare also tracks integrated delivery networks (IDNs) and how many physician groups they have in their networks.

3. CommonSpirit Health; Illinois: 54

7. LifePoint Health; Tennessee: 37

8. Trinity Health; Minnesota: 34

9. Northside Hospital System; Georgia: 31

10. Universal Health Services; Pennsylvania: 28

11. Tenet Healthcare; Texas: 26

12. Ascension Health; Missouri: 21

12. Prime Healthcare Services; California: 21

14. University of Pittsburgh Medical Center; Pennsylvania: 19

14. Acadia Healthcare; Tennessee: 19

16. Baylor Scott & White Health; Texas: 17
