Harsh Goenka Suggests Banana Leaves As Eco-Friendly Packaging, Twitter Applauds

Banana is an important part of Indian cuisine and even our culture. From its leaves to the fruit itself, humble banana has proved itself to be immensely useful for multiple reasons. Banana leaves are popularly used to serve food in southern Indian states such as Kerala and Tamil Nadu. A typical Sadya feast served on Onam is always placed on a banana leaf in the traditional style. The leaf is then disposed off after a single-use, without having to worry about environmental impacts. Can you imagine if banana leaves were used as an eco-friendly packaging alternative too? Industrialist Harsh Goenka took to Twitter to share this very idea with his followers. Harsh Goenka took to Twitter to share a picture of food produce being wrapped in banana leaves, rather than the usual plastic packaging. This would help reduce the amount of plastic waste generated by us, especially single-use plastic which is immediately disposed of. “Supermarkets are using banana leaves instead of plastic packaging. Great idea! Need for the future,” he wrote in his tweet.

The idea of using banana leaves instead of plastic was applauded and appreciated by Twitter users. Harsh Goenka’s tweet received 3.2k likes and hundreds of retweets too. “Much needed solution,” said one user while another called the eco-friendly packaging, “Innovative, sustainable and cost-effective!”
