Government issues guidelines to tackle fake reviews on e-commerce sites – Times of India

0
The Indian government on Monday issued guidelines to curb fake reviews and ratings on e-commerce websites, coming into effect from November 25, 2022. The new framework comes a year after the government proposed tougher rules to curb false reviews and cheating complaints on e-commerce portals.
The government has instituted a new standard titled “IS 19000:2022” under the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), under which platforms will be required to have review administrators, mandating them to moderate reviews using tools or manually to filter biased or fraudulent reviews. Further, the reviews published should include the publishing date and ratings.
Consumers leaving the review would not be allowed to edit their review once live; also, they cannot use foul language. Further, e-commerce platforms will have to make sure that customers giving fake reviews should be prohibited from publishing reviews in the future, say the guidelines.
Secretary of Consumer Affairs Rohit Kumar Singh, according to reports, said that all the stakeholders would have to ensure that these guidelines are being followed. He further states that the government wants all e-tailers to adopt the framework as early as possible, adhering to the latest guidelines.
And if fake reviews are still found, the platform will be penalised for unfair trading practices, upon which a consumer court can take penal action.
Major e-commerce platforms, including Zomato, Swiggy, Tata Sons, Reliance Retail, Meta and Amazon, were some of the stakeholders to participate in the committee along with BIS.
