Google will not offer five years of Android updates to Pixel 6 series – Times of India
NEW DELHI: Google expanded its Pixel smartphone lineup with the launch of — Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro smartphones. The new Pixel smartphones come with camera improvements and are powered by the company’s own custom-made Tensor chipset.
Before the launch of the smartphones it was speculated that Google will offer five years of OS updates to both the smartphones. However, that is not the case as the tech giant will offer only three years of Android updates to both the devices. As reported by Android Police, both the new Pixel smartphones will get Android OS updates till 2024.
In a statement, given to The Verge, Google said, “Users will still get at least 3 years of OS updates, after which we’re committing to ensure that Pixels will stay up-to-date and secure. The frequency and categories of updates will depend on the capabilities and needs of the hardware.”
The company has also confirmed that both the newly launched Pixel smartphones will get five years of security updates. As per Google, Pixel 6 series phones are the highest rated phone for security. The duo include the next generation Titan M2TM, which works with Tensor security core to protect users’ sensitive data, PINs and passwords. The company has extended its support window to at least five years of security updates.
Google Pixel 6 series price starts at $599. Pixel 6 Pro, which boasts of more advanced capabilities and upgraded finishes, will be available at $899 onwards. The two phones are available for pre-order in the 8 countries and will go on sale starting October 28.
