Earlier this year, Google had announced that G Suite legacy free edition plan will not be available after June 30, 2022. There’s a change in plan and Google is now offering a no-cost alternative to these users. The company will allow users to stay on G Suite legacy free edition plan for personal use. For those unaware, G Suite is Google’s cloud-based suite of productivity and collaboration tools launched in 2006 as Google Apps. It was later rebranded and named as Workspace. Here’s all about how the free edition plan of G Suite will work:
How can users retain their G Suite legacy free subscription
Users who are using the G Suite legacy free edition for non-commercial purposes can opt out of the transition to Google Workspace. These users can opt out of the transition to Google Workspace by going to the Google Admin console. They can continue to use their custom domain with Gmail, retain access to no-cost Google services such as Google Drive and Google Meet, as well as keep their purchases and data. Google also has a warning for users misusing this free account, “G Suite legacy free edition is only intended for personal non-commercial use. If you’re using G Suite legacy free edition for business purposes, we will transition your account to Google Workspace.”
What if these users take no action
If these users don’t take any action, their account will be suspended starting on August 1, 2022. “To reactivate the account, they will either need to upgrade to Google Workspace or contact Support to identify as a non-business user,” says Google.
Will these users continue to get business support from Google
No, G Suite legacy free edition does not include support. Google also said that in the future Google it may remove certain business functionalities.
Can these users transfer their data out of Google
If these users want to move their data, their administrator can export their organization’s data and cancel their legacy subscription. If you want to retrieve data from additional Google services, they can export the data (including Google Workspace and additional Google services) with Google Takeout at takeout.google.com. The administrator will need to have Google Takeout enabled.
