Google Drive users, here’s a message for you from Google – Times of India

Google Drive is one of the most popular file storage and sharing services. It allows users to utilise Google’s cloud for storing files, sharing files and syncing them across devices. However, like all other tech tools Google Drive too is used at times by cybercriminals and spammers. Google on its part had been working hard to stop spam and other malware from seeping in through these files. Not just this, it is used by some to store things like hate speech, sexually explicit material and violence and other things banned under the company’s terms and conditions. Google is now getting tough with such users.
According to a post on Google Workspace updates, if it identifies a file to be violating the company’s terms of service or program policies, it will restrict the file. “When a Google Drive file is identified as violating Google’s Terms of Service or program policies, it may be restricted. When it’s restricted, you may see a flag next to the filename, you won’t be able to share it, and your file will no longer be publicly accessible, even to people who have the link. “
Google added that such users will be notified by an email. “Now, the owner of the item in Google Drive will receive an email notifying them of the action taken, and alerting them of how to request a review of the restriction if they think it is a mistake. For items in shared drives, the shared drive manager will receive the notification,” says the blog.
Google alerts its users that this drastic step is being taken to prevent the abuse of its services. The company is trying to prevent people who use Google Drive to host illegal content like sexually explicit materials, malware and other unlawful content. This initiative is certainly a milestone to make Google Drive a safer service, but what happens if the company restricts your files by mistake.
Google also mentioned on its blog that the company will implement a system for users to submit a review request if they think that a file is restricted by mistake. Yet, it is not clear how long such a review would take.
