0

India is celebrating its 74th Republic Day today (January 26). Google has also marked this occasion by dedicating a hand-cut paper doodle. Illustrated by Ahmedabad, Gujarat-based guest-artist Parth Kothekar, today’s doodle is celebrating India’s Republic Day. On this day in 1950, India declared itself a sovereign, democratic, and republic state with the adoption of the constitution.
Today’s Doodle artwork is crafted from intricately hand-cut paper. Many elements of the Republic Day parade are represented in the artwork including the Rashtrapati Bhavan (where the president resides), the India Gate, the CRFP marching contingent, and motorcycle riders.

India gained its freedom from the British Empire in 1947 and began drafting its constitution soon after. The adoption of this document paved the way for democracy and empowered Indian citizens to elect their own representatives. On January 26, 1950, the Indian Constitution came into effect. Along with this, the day is also remembered as the anniversary of the declaration of Purna Swaraj by the Indian National Congress in 1929.
The Republic Day celebrations consist of various cultural events which are designed to honor the resilience, history and diversity of the country. Like every year this year also the day will be celebrated with a ceremonial parade. The Republic Day parade will take place in New Delhi which will consist of tableaux from each state and dozens of bands and folk dances.
