Google announces new security features: Account Safety Status, virtual cards and more – Times of India

Google announced a number of new additions to its products at I/O 2022. The company gave more details about the next version of its mobile operating system, Android 13, enhancements to search, Google Docs, Google Meet, YouTube and more. Along with all these, the company also announced new security features that aim to make internet browsing and shopping ‘safer’.
Here’s how Google plans to keep you safe
Account Safety Status: Google is adding users safety status to the apps they use. These updates will feature a simple yellow alert icon on profile picture that will flag actions they should take to secure their account.
Phishing protections in Google Workspace: Google is scaling the phishing and malware protections that guard Gmail to Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides.
Automatic 2-Step Verification: Google says that it will continue it journey towards a passwordless future with 2-Step Verification (2SV) auto enrollment to help improve security of their Google Accounts and reduce their risk of getting phished. This will build on its work last year to auto enroll 150+ million accounts in 2SV.
Virtual Cards: Google is launching virtual cards on Chrome and Android. With these virtual cards, when users use autofill to enter their payment details at checkout, virtual cards will add an additional layer of security by replacing your actual card number with a distinct, virtual number. This eliminates the need for users to manually enter card details like the CVV at checkout. These cards will be easy to manage at pay.google.com — where users can enable the feature for eligible cards, access your virtual card number, and see recent virtual card transactions. Virtual cards will be rolling out in the US for Visa, American Express and all Capital One cards, with Mastercard coming later this year. So far, there is no information if these virtual cards will launch in India and when.
Protected Computing: The introduction of Protected Computing will ensure the privacy and safety of user data. Google says that it ensures user privacy and safety by minimizing user footprint across the internet, randomizing data and restricting access to a user’s data. Now, people can easily request to remove results about them from Google search. The feature is said to arrive in the coming months in the Google search app. And you can also take control of the ads you see on the internet from My Ad Center.
