When Tasmanian musician Elinor Morrisby offered her spare room to Russian geochemist Sofia Tetroeva all those years ago, neither could have imagined that this would be the beginning of a life-long friendship [July 8]. Their shared love of cricket and travel has taken them on some exciting journeys, and while Sofia holds fears for her Russian homeland, it’s clear that nothing will ever come between these remarkable women. What a shame that countries in conflict can’t do the same.

It was inspiring to read about Richard Harris [July 8], who helped save all those Thai boys trapped in a cave, but I loved the philosophy of his dad about death. My 87-year-old husband told me, as he lay ill, “Don’t cry, I’ve had a wonderful innings”. In a different way, that too is inspiring.

High Anxiety
Not only women suffer anxiety. A close relative of mine went through a childhood of constant beatings, emotional (and other) abuse, boarding schools, moving around and instability, leaving him with many anxiety-related illnesses, both physical and mental. His academic learning and life of caring for others helped him to rationalise and understand these things, but the emotional toll trumps the cerebral. Marie Anderson

This story is so beautifully written, with such reflective deep thinking. The description of anxiety – it lives in your guts – is so relatable. The last sentence on the value of remaining hopeful as the “essential act of courage” will stay with me. KatieS
