A recent study conducted by EPWA has uncovered the increasing popularity of gaming as a career choice in India. The study indicates that a significant 83% of respondents view gaming as a viable source of income, either as their primary or secondary means of earning. This finding signifies a noteworthy shift in perception, suggesting that gaming can now be pursued professionally. Specifically, 39% of respondents consider gaming as their primary source of income, while 44% view it as a secondary source. Furthermore, the study highlights how gamers have been able to enhance their earnings by honing their skills, ultimately motivating them to pursue gaming as a profession.
The study also provides valuable insights into the preferences of Indian gamers, revealing that popular online games vary across different demographics and levels of engagement. Among the top choices, puzzle games, board games, and adventure sports emerge as the favorites among players of all ages. While gamers aged 16-25 tend to favor AAA games, more experienced players are drawn to games like Poker, Rummy, Carrom, and Puzzles. These findings shed light on the diverse gaming preferences among Indian gamers.
The study also delves deep into the attitude and preferences of gamers in India and shares important data on required skills, family and social support, professional gaming, and the impact of regulations. In contrast to the commonly held notion of negative behavioral traits associated with gaming, the study emphasizes the values of dedication and commitment prevalent in the online gaming community.
Remarkably, gamers devote 10-20 hours per week to actively participate in their chosen craft. Notably, a significant 77% of individuals who achieve the highest gaming hours fall within the age range of 16-25. Furthermore, success in the realm of online gaming requires essential skills such as analytical abilities (97%), concentration (87%), and creativity (69%). These findings underscore the positive aspects and skill development associated with online gaming.
