BHUBANESWAR: France’s Timothee Clement has been turning heads for a while now with his skills on the hockey pitch.
Not only did he win FIH Rising Star of the Year award in 2022 but he also won the bronze medal at the Junior Hockey World Cup held in Bhubaneswar in 2021 and was named the best player of the tournament for scoring 14 goals in six matches.
But interestingly, he played tennis for 10 years before taking up hockey following in the foot -steps of his father Guillaume Clément, a name synonymous with French hockey.
Speaking on how the sport helped him become better at hockey, the youngster said, “Tennis helped me to do well in hockey, especially with touch, handeye coordination, and 3D skills. It also helps me while drag-flicking and making line stops.”
Although Clement was among the reserves for the Hockey World Cup, he finally got his chance to play at the tour nament in France’s last group game against Argentina after Stanislas Bran -icki had to be replaced because of an injury. However, it wasn’t his first as he also played at the last edition of the World Cup held here in 2018 and scored two goals.
He now will have to play a ma -jor role if France are to beat Germany in the crossovers and qual -ify for the quarterfinals. Irrespective of how it goes for him in the tournament, he has achieved a lot in recent times. Apart from his stupendous show at the Junior Hockey World Cup, he scored one of the goals when France shocked India 5-2 in Pro League last year.
“It was a very good feeling to win against a strong team like India. For the future also it’s very important to win against good teams,” said Clément, a big fan of PSG. Considered to be a prodigy back in France, the youngster undoubtedly owes a lot to his fa -ther. “He was a very good player and he is a role model for me. He always gave me good advice, taught me skills, and shared im -portant tactical lessons with me,” added the 22-year-old.
