Freed-Hardeman Captures MSC Softball Tournament Championship

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Top-seeded Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) captured the 2022 Mid-South Conference Softball Tournament Championship with a 7-0 victory over Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) on Sunday at South Warren High School.

With the victory, the Lions (48-3) earned one of the conference’s automatic bids into the NAIA Tournament. As the runner-up, the Blue Raiders 38-16) collected the conference’s second automatic bid.

After the first two innings were scoreless, the Lions got on the board first in the third inning. Following a Kennedy Harris walk, Sophie Dunavant hit a two-run home run to give Freed-Hardeman a 2-0 lead.

Freed-Hardeman took control of the game scoring five runs in the fourth inning. Freed-Hardeman increased its lead to 3-0 following an error and then Catherine Crabb increased the lead to 4-0. Dunavant recorded her third and fourth RBIs of the game to increase the Lions lead to 6-0. Caitlin Mitchell added a run on a sacrifice fly to make it 7-0.

Throughout the game, Lindsey Wilson was unable to capitalize with runners on base as they left 11 runners on. The Blue Raiders left the bases loaded in the fourth and fifth inning.

Brittany Adair picked up the win pitching four innings of relief allowing just one hit, walking five and striking out 11. Dunavant led the Freed-Hardeman offense with three hits.

Kylie Brown led the Blue Raiders with two hits. Sadie Werner earned the loss pitching 3-1/3 innings giving up six runs on six hits.

In the loser’s bracket final, Campbellsville got off to a fast start scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Madison Davis hit a sacrifice fly and then Taylor Windell hit a three-run home run. Lindsey Wilson got on the board in the top of the second on a Desiree Chang RBI single. The Tigers increased their lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the second on a Keely Bowling solo home run.

The Blue Raiders chipped away at the deficit scoring three runs in the fourth. Brianna Griffiths, Chang and Mikayla Marquez each drove in a run in the inning to make it 5-4. Elizabeth Funk tied the game in the fifth on a sacrifice fly. Lindsey Wilson exploded in the seventh inning scoring six runs. Brooklyn Ott gave the Blue Raiders a 6-5 lead before Lindsey Wilson scored two runs on an error. Alexis Garayzar capped off the inning with a three-run home run to give Lindsey Wilson an 11-5.
