NEW DELHI: India is set to manufacture Apple’s flagship iPhone 14 smartphones with the company confirming that the devices would be made in India at contract-manufacturer Foxconn’s factory in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu.
This would perhaps be the quickest scale-up that Apple has initiated in its India manufacturing setup with the latest iPhone being made here within weeks of its global unveiling that happened on September 7.
When contacted, the company confirmed the development. “The new iPhone 14 line-up introduces ground-breaking technologies and important safety capabilities. We’re excited to be manufacturing the device in India,” Apple told TOI in a statement.
Sources said that the India-made devices would not only be sold within the country, but also exported to global markets. However, manufacturing in India will not mean lower prices for the devices.
Apple currently has its top 3 global manufacturing partners making smartphones in India. These are Wistron, Foxconn, and Pegatron.
The company started manufacturing iPhones in India in 2017 with the iPhoneSE. Currently, Apple also makes the iPhone SE, iPhone 12, and iPhone 13 in India. All the three players enjoy manufacturing benefits provided as part of the government’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme.
The growing engagement in India comes at a time when the company is understood to be looking outside China for strong manufacturing operations. China accounts for the majority of production for the company and it is estimated that Apple sources as much as 95% of its goods from the Dragon Land.
The Indian government is understood to have asked the American electronics giant to generate annual production output worth $50 billion within the country in 5-6 years and expand its locally-made product kitty beyond iPhones to include Macbooks, iPads, Air Pods and watches.
Apple has been studying the ‘Make in India’ programme for its other products, but has so far made investments only for iPhones. Apple is believed to have had revenues upwards of $3. 5 billion in India in the financial year ending September 2021, though a lar-ge part of this turnover came from products which had been imported largely from China and not made in the country. Sale of India-made products would currently be low, thus prompting the government to nudge the company to look at deepening its India manufacturing commitment.
The manufacturing potential looks bright for India. Apple’s global revenue in the fiscal year ended September 2021, stood at a $365 billion, of which $191 billion came from iPhones, while around $67 billion came from Macbooks and iPads. Wearables such as Air Pods and watches turned in another $38 billion.
