Fitbit: Fitbit login may use only Google Accounts starting this summer – Times of India

Fitbit users may have to start using just Google Accounts to log in as it plans to move away from its own login system. Previous reports also suggested this change and now the tech giant has reportedly confirmed the same. According to a report by 9to5Google, Fitbit has confirmed that new device registration and migration to logging in via Google Accounts will start this summer. The company has also reportedly outlined the benefits of using Google Accounts for logging in to the Fitbit app. Currently, Fitbit two-factor authentication (2FA) takes place only over SMS.
Fitbit login via Google Accounts: How will it work
As per the report, the Fitbit app login via Google Accounts will start rolling out in the summer. Once this feature is rolled out, users will be able to see a prompt in the Fitbit app (or an option in app settings). This prompt will ask users to migrate to logging in with a Google Account. Users will also be able to review their existing setup before they migrate to the login procedure, the report adds.
The report also mentions that existing users won’t have to switch to the new procedure until 2025. However, once this mandate rolls out, new Fitbit users will need to use their Google Account to set up their devices.
Fitbit login via Google Accounts: Importance
The report notes that the company has also outlined the benefits of logging into the Fitbit app using their Google Accounts. This change will ensure that users have one username or password for different services including Gmail, YouTube, Photos and other first-party platforms. Moreover, Fitbit users will also be offered “industry-leading privacy and security.”
Google has reportedly said: “Users will have added, unified privacy controls – including the ability to manage all Fitbit data in the Google Privacy Center – to keep their health and wellness data safe and secure. They will also be able to see and manage where they are logged in across their Google Account.”

The company has also assured that users’ “Fitbit health and wellness data won’t be used for Google Ads, and it will continue to be kept separate from Google Ads data.”
Apart from the change in the login experience, Fitbit users don’t have to worry about any changes for accessing their historical health and wellness stats, the company adds.
Fitbit has also reportedly mentioned that this move will help the company in laying the groundwork for upcoming Fitbit capabilities. The company has also offered similar reasons to describe the recent removal of Challenges and open groups.
