Fire in New York City apartment block kills 19

A large fire in an apartment building in the Bronx in New York City left at 19 people dead on Sunday, including nine children.

A total of 63 people were injured in the blaze, with 32 sent to hospitals, Daniel Nigro, NYC Fire Department commissioner, told reporters. Most of the injuries were caused by smoke inhalation.

Nigro said the 19-story building, at 333 East 181st Street, caught fire around 11am. The blaze started in a duplex apartment divided between the building’s second and third floors, officials said. The door to that unit had been left open, allowing smoke and flames to spread rapidly throughout the building.

Nearly 200 firefighters were on the scene. Nigro said the first crews arrived within minutes and found victims “on every floor” in “cardiac and respiratory arrest”.

Officials said the fire had since been “knocked down,” meaning the main portion of the fire had been suppressed. The cause has yet to be determined.

“The numbers are horrific,” New York mayor Eric Adams told reporters on Sunday afternoon. “This is going to be one of the worst fires that we have witnessed during modern times.”
