Fake WhatsApp message says govt offering free recharge
On the microblogging site Twitter, PIB Fact-Check tweeted that the information is fake and that the government has not announced such a scheme. The post included a picture of the false WhatsApp message, which stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Free Mobile Recharge Plan” would give all Indian customers a free Rs 239 recharge for 28 days. Users were instructed to click the blue link to claim the deal.
“This claim is #fake,” PIB tweeted.
To combat the proliferation of false news and misinformation, which has been common on social media platforms like WhatsApp, the PIB has established a fact-checking branch. Public confusion and fear have been widely diffused due to this phenomenon. The PIB is acting against this problem by using its social media channels to disprove false information and offer clarifications.
How to be safe from fake WhatsApp messages?
It should be noted that any message requesting that you click on a link needs to be carefully examined. Refrain from clicking on the link and advise others to do the same if it appears to be coming from an unofficial source. Sometimes, you may determine whether a statement being spread is untrue or not by performing a quick Google search.
The Meta-owned platform advises users not to tap, share, or forward messages that are suspicious or seem too good to be true. It is advised that users report the message, block the sender, and delete the message if they receive one of these. Also, they can inform the contact that the message seems dubious and instruct them on how to use WhatsApp sensibly.
