Explained: Why Google Bard may be well-equipped to take on Microsoft in the AI ‘wars’ triggered by ChatGPT – Times of India
The revolution will not be televised is what Gill-Scott Heron wrote in a poem he recited in 1970. The revolution, however, since then has been televised, live-streamed, TikTok-ed and whatnot. The latest revolution has been AI-ed. Google’s announcement about Bard is certainly a definitive moment in the era of AI, which actually started a few years ago. But OpenAI heralded a change with ChatGPT and fast-tracked Google’s big moves.
Google and AI go a long way back
In a blog post, Google CEO Sundar Pichai called AI “the most profound technology we are working on today.” Pichai and Google have been working on AI models and techniques across a wide range of things. In fact, as Pichai said, Google “re-oriented the company around AI six years ago” and it remains at the heart and soul of what Google is all about.
In an indirect reference to ChatGPT, Pichai also said that it was in 2017 when Google published a research paper titled “Transformer” which is “now the basis of many of the generative AI applications you’re starting to see today.”
Google’s AI efforts have been out there in most of its popular apps and services. Be it Gmail, Maps, or Search, AI has been — and now this may sound an oxymoron — at the forefront but doing its job in the background.
The arrival of ChatGPT and Microsoft’s involvement and investment got AI — relatively speaking — from a silent and effective tool to one whose impact can be seen in an instant.
Google is going all out to take on Microsoft
Google has been ahead of Microsoft in almost every popular technology. Gmail burst on the scene and left Hotmail (later rebranded Outlook) in its wake. Chrome came and turned Internet Explorer into some cruel memes and made it a butt of jokes. Microsoft was getting into the mobile OS game but Android came and confined it to the recycle bin first and ultimately forced Microsoft to empty the trash.
But with ChatGPT. Microsoft may have stolen a march. OpenAI wasn’t Microsoft’s idea but it may just turn out to be the wisest billion dollars Satya Nadella may have spent this decade.
ChatGPT took everyone — certainly not Google — by surprise when it arrived on November 30, 2022. It went viral, became the talk of the town and started a conversation on AI, which was earlier restricted strictly to the tech circles.
Google already had really cool AI models that do some fascinating and innovative work in the background. As Pichai pointed out, it had BERT and MUM — two models that are used in Search and make understanding human language in a context that is extremely useful.
Pichai, as per a report by CNBC, sent out an email to all Google employees and called on them to help make Bard better. All Googlers will be called upon to help with Bard. “Next week, we’ll be enlisting every Googler to help shape Bard and contribute through a special company-wide dogfood,” he wrote in the email. “Dogfood” is when employees actually test their own product before it actually reaches out.
Microsoft’s response to Bard has been a swift one — a surprise event where it is likely to announce the integration of ChatGPT in Bing search engine. Search is another space where Google is way, way ahead of Microsoft as Bing has a rather minuscule share among users.
Both Microsoft and Google are going head to head in the AI ‘war’ and while as they say there are no winners or losers in a war, this one could end up being a big win for the digital citizens.
