Front loading washing machines generally come with more features, but they usually face a mold and stackability issues. Studies suggest that a front loading washing machine uses 2,000 gallons less water per year on average compared to a typical top load washing machine. Front-loading ones also need less detergent as they use less water.
The way the drums of a front loading washing machine spin at the end of the cycle removes more water from clothes, which results in a smaller dryer time. Always check for the Energy Star label to choose an efficient one that won’t bring a huge electricity bill at the end of every month.
Maintenance
The most common issue with front loading washing machines is the formation of mold around the door’s rubber gasket. So, front-loading washers need to be cleaned more frequently compared to top-loading ones. Manufacturers are coming up with solutions that are designed to fight this problem which includes — self-clean cycles, antimicrobial-coated surfaces and special vent systems.
On the contrary, top loading washing machines don’t face mold problems as they depend on gravity to pull down water, so they don’t require any maintenance. Top loaders don’t have any seals or gaskets to trap water and there is a free airflow through the lid.
Recommendations: Users must always place a front loading washing machine in an area that has good airflow. Try wiping the door gasket and detergent drawer after every use and leave the doors a little open to avoid mold.
