They say don’t change your horse midstream, and for Motorola — currently on a hot streak that’s boosted it into third place in North American smartphone sales — that means taking what’s worked in the past and sticking with it — fomenting a somewhat predictable, but still anticipated, sequence of annual model refreshes.

Next up to receive the (year goes here) treatment will be one of the company’s most affordable mobile data speedsters, the Moto G 5G (2022). Previously seen in Plus as well as Ace variants, the latest G 5G — codenamed Austin — is a 6.53-inch phone with entry-level 720 x 1,600 resolution and a slightly faster-than-normal refresh rate of 90Hz.

Under the hood, Austin’s powered by a Dimensity 700 SoC from MediaTek, which features two A76 cores and six A55 cores. At either 4GB or 6GB, RAM is a bit on the low end, though at least one configuration will benefit from 256GB of internal storage (the base model has 64GB).

A triple-rear camera brings together a 50-megapixel primary shooter, 2MP macro lens, and a 2MP depth sensor, as well. Its front-facing selfie cam is 13MP, and while wired charging maxes out at a somewhat conservative 15 watts, the battery is certainly of the more capacious variety, at 5,000mAh.
