Georgetown College softball started NAIA National Championship Opening Round play against one of the best in the country. As the four seed in the Lawrenceville, Ga. bracket, the Tigers (27-21) faced off with the top seeded, No. 8 Georgia Gwinnett College Grizzlies. GGC is 24-4 at home.

Despite hanging in early, three errors proved costly in a 5-1 setback. Georgetown falls into the consolation bracket where the team must win two tomorrow to advance to Wednesday’s championship finals. The Tigers plays University of Rio Grande 2:30 pm Tuesday. The RedStorm lost 4-0 to Milligan University it their opening game Monday.

GGC scored early after a lead off single came around with smart base running and one timely hit. A two-out single by Sydney Pelaez plated Lea McFadden for the first run of the game. Georgetown went three up, three down in its first three at-bats.

Defensively, the Tigers seemed to settle down after the first and had two outs in the third when Pelaez dug in. She doubled off the left field fence and advance two bases off errors for a 2-0 lead. Kristen Klimesh struck back with GC’s best hit of the day, a triple off the right field fence. She came in on Lindsey Mitchell’s sacrifice fly and it was 2-1 after four. Klimesh had the team’s only other hit, a single in the top of the sixth.

The game went into defensive mode on both sides until the bottom of the sixth. Another Tiger error scored one run. This was followed by two RBI doubles for three insurance runs.

The Grizzlies’ Alexa Good continued her dominate day in the circle, striking out two more in GC’s final at-bat to finish with 11 in the game.
