Envoys of key Lat Am states of Brazil & Argentina oppose sanctions against Russia
During a recent webinar “New Opportunities for Imports from Latin America and the Caribbean”, the Ambassador of Argentina in Moscow, Eduardo Antonio Zuine, said that the sanctions “meaningless”, as they hit the least protected categories of citizens to a greater extent.
Brazilian Ambassador to Moscow Rodrigo Baena Soares said that Brazil does not support the sanctions because they have an impact on food security and the world is already in a new reality. The diplomat stressed that Brazil is Russia’s main trading partner in Latin America with a trade turnover of about $7 billion in 2021.
Venezuelan Ambassador to Moscow Carlos Rafael Faria Tortosa said that his country, like Cuba and Nicaragua, has been living under sanctions for a long time. “We believe that the fraternal Russian people will cope with these sanctions,” the Venezuelan ambassador said.
It may be pointed out Finance Ministers of Brazil, Argentina, China India, Saudi Arabia and Indoensia did not walk out when Russian Finance Minister started speaking virtually during a recent meeting of Finance Ministers of G20 held in Washington while Finance Ministers of the Western countries from G20 group staged a walk out to protest Ukraine war. It may be pointed out that several countries across Latin America, Africa & Asia have not backed sanctions against Russia.
