Domino’s Fails To Impress Italy; Pulls Back Business After 7 Years

Domino’s is possibly the most popular pizzeria chain across the globe. It has over 18,800 outlets all over the world (as per 2021 data), catering to patrons across ages. In fact, it is one fast food joint that you will get anywhere and everywhere you go. But did you know, Domino’s couldn’t make a mark in Italy – the land of pizzas and pastas?! You heard us. A recent news, doing the rounds on the internet, says the chain making an exit from Italy after failing to ace the market. According to a report published in the BBC, Domino’s Pizza closed its last stores in the country after the firm (that operated Domino’s outlets) filed for bankruptcy.

CNN further states, Domino’s started its business in Italy in 2015, signing 10 years franchise deal with ePizza – the franchise operator of Domino’s Italy. Since then, they opened 800 stores across the country. The Michigan-based brand began serving traditional Italian dishes (especially pizzas and pastas), by adding American twist to it. One popular instance of the same is pizza with pineapple topping. However, this didn’t go down well with people in Italy, who preferred the classic way of making pizzas over the ‘twisted ones’. As a result, the business got affected, leading to the closure. “According to an Italian food website Agrodolce, ePizza filed for bankruptcy in April 2022 and all outlets stopped delivery services from 20 April”, reads a report in The Guardian.

Describing the incident, Reuters further tweeted, “Domino’s always faced an uphill task trying to sell its American-style pizzas to Italians, and the company’s decision to shut all its outlets in Italy hasn’t surprised the country’s pizza lovers.” Take a look at the tweet:

The tweet has received more than 194k views till now, with people reacting to the news strongly. While some complained of Domino’s having “lame toppings”, others criticised the “bad crust”.
