Hyderabad: While several candidates are giving super speciality courses a miss now – they attribute it to lack of growth prospects – Vice-Chancellor of Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS), Dr B Karunakar Reddy, believes that a huge demand for doctors with super speciality is set to arise across the globe, in the next 10 years.

Speaking to TOI, on Sunday he said that candidates are not looking ahead and giving up on some amazing opportunities for their short-term goals. “Right now, we see many surgical and non-clinical seats remain vacant as candidates do not realise the importance of super speciality. In the next decade, there will huge demand for all such doctors not just in India but across the world,” said Reddy.

“Sadly, even students who are able to secure just about 50% to 60% of the required marks, only want a super speciality in clinical subjects like oncology, surgical gastroenterology, andrology, among others. They aren’t giving other courses a thought as their pursuit is fixed on some streams,” Reddy said

In Telangana, there are about 160 to 170 super speciality courses. A majority of these seats are in Osmania Medical College, Gandhi Medical College and Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences. Very few are available in the state’s private medical colleges.
