Delhi: MCD dispensaries, hospitals face shortage of anti-rabies vaccines

Delhi: The dispensaries and hospitals of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi are running low on stocks of anti-rabies vaccines. According to the civic corporation, the departments are left with just 5,000 doses of vaccines.

MCD officials said that the anti-rabies vaccines will soon be procured adding that a tender for procuring 30,000 doses of the anti-rabies vaccine has been floated.

So far this year, over 13,000 cases of dog bites have been logged in the national capital. Several of these incidents were of serious nature.

Between April and July 2022, the MCD’s veterinary department sterilised and vaccinated 2,392 stray dogs with the anti-rabies vaccine. The corporation is operating 18 dog sterilisation centres in the city with the help of NGOs.

Meanwhile, in a bid to control the stray dog population in the city, the MCD has introduced a new way to boost sterlisation of stray dogs.

A senior MCD official said the corporation has rolled out a dog sterilisation module on its mobile app ‘MCD App 311’ that will have updates on the entire process, along with photos.

Pictures of dogs, along with details of the locality, can be uploaded on this app after which the dgs will be picked up from the localities.

From the pickup of the dog and its arrival at the sterilisation centre to the date of surgery and its release, all details will be updated online with photographs.

MCD’s Veterinary department officials will track the sterilisation through this app and will ensure that after surgery, the animals are dropped back in the same location that they were picked up from.

No state wide survey, to have a database on the dog population, has been conducted in more than a decade. The last dog census was conducted in 2009, which recorded a total of 5.6 lakh dogs in Delhi.

As per the officials, the number of cases of dog bites has seen slow but steady in the city for the last few years. In 2018, a total of 22,542 cases of dog bites were logged at MCD’s dispensaries, colony hospitals, and five key hospitals.

In the last five years, nearly 82,000 cases of dog bites were registered in the city.
