NEW DELHI: The International Cricket Council’s (ICC) aspiration to grow as a global sport hinges on the Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Birmingham, where the women will play in the T20 format.
“Putting cricket in multi-sport games is good for the growth of the game. It gives a lot of the member countries a seat in the top table of sport organizations within their country. The coverage of these games may not have traditional cricket audiences. That is one of the opportunities with CWG to reach new audiences,” ICC CEO Geoff Allardice said during an interaction on Wednesday.
While men’s cricket has been driving revenues, the women’s game has an opportunity to be at the forefront to represent the sport at global events.
“The quality of our top women’s events has been outstanding the last five years. We heard from a number of captains last night, they are very excited to be around athletes from other sports. I am sure cricket will be a star attraction as we move forward with our ambitions to be part of more multi-sport events,” Allardice said.
On the status of where cricket stands in its bid to be a part of the LA Olympics in 2028, Allardice said: “We have declared our ambition to be in the Olympics. We are assisting the LA organisers to help their assessment. The decision is due next year. As of now, there’s nothing recorded.”
For the first time, ICC has also drawn a concrete FTP for women’s cricket. According to Allardice, women’s cricket is expected to have a busier calendar. “First time we have had a long-term plan for women’s FTP to give broadcasters, sponsors and fans certainty about who is playing whom at what time of the year.
“It is structured around the women’s championship from 2022-25. The players are also commenting that their schedules are a lot busier than what it used to be a few years ago with various domestic leagues strengthening. You will find a very solid calendar for women’s international cricket,” the CEO said.
