NEW DELHI: India on Thursday pulled out of the ASBC Asian U-22 boxing championships in Uzbekistan due to the rising numbers of Covid-19 cases in the ongoing elite men’s national camp in NIS Patiala, TOI has learnt.
According to Boxing Federation of India (BFI) sources, the decision to withdraw the contingent from the year’s first international tournament was taken during a meeting with coaches and medical staff who advised against sending the team to Tashkent after a Covid outbreak in the camp, which has 63 male boxers and 27 coaching and support staff personnel.
The meeting was attended by BFI’s secretary general Hemanta Kalita, federation officials, coaches Narendra Rana (men’s) and Bhaskar Bhat (women’s) and medical commission chairman Dr Karanjeet Singh.
The event, which is to take place in Tashkent from January 20-30, has attracted entries from major Asian boxing playing nations. The first edition of championships was planned to be hosted in Tashkent on December 7-17 in 2021 but following the decision of the management of the Asian Boxing Confederation and the Uzbekistan Boxing Federation, the event was postponed to January 20-30.
According to sources, there have been eight new cases reported in the camp on Thursday after 18 national campers returned Covid positive a day earlier. Among the new cases, five are boxers and three from coaching staff.
The decision to withdraw the team has been communicated to the Uzbekistan federation and the ASBC.
