After much anticipation, Valve has announced the Counter-Strike 2, built on the new Source 2 engine. Currently only available as a limited test, CS 2 is slated to arrive later this year.
Valve says the upcoming sequel completely revamps all aspects of the Counter-Strike experience, including every system, content piece, and component.
Although the features have yet to be revealed, the sequel’s launch will bring various enhancements such as revamped maps, innovative dynamic smoke grenades, tick-rate-independent gameplay, redesigned visual effects and audio, and the transfer of all CS: GO items to CS2. And it will be available as a free upgrade to CS: GO and free to play for all.

Some specific maps have been reconstructed entirely for Counter-Strike 2, while others remain the same but use advanced features of the new engine. For example, maps like Mirage are transferred to the new engine without modifications, whereas maps like Nuke showcase new lighting effects. Additionally, community members can use new tools to entirely rework beloved maps such as Overpass, as shown by Valve.
Then, there is a big change to how smoke grenades work. In the sequel, the game’s physics has been changed, so grenades are now dynamic, and smoke interacts with the environment. Also, bullets can create holes in walls.
CS 2 “limited test” starts today, and players will be selected to join it based on factors like “recent playtime on Valve official servers, trust factor, and Steam account standing.” If selected, players will receive a notification in the main menu, letting them in. The limited test is available only for Windows.
In the current test releases, players can access the Dust II map in Deathmatch and “unranked competitive matchmaking.” Players are allowed to post the videos and even stream the CS 2.
